Unemployment is one of the most important concerns of economists and policy makers in every economy.  Unemployment in an economy means that part of the scarce resources of the economy are not being utilized, hence loss of output.  It also means that a segment of the population is left without means of supporting itself.  There are significant economic, social and political issues that result from high levels of unemployment in an economy.  In this part of the course unemployment, different causes of unemployment, and some of the shortcomings of the official unemployment rates are discussed.
